Are Cardio workouts beneficial?

Posted by Beni Cook

With the ever-increasing rise in popularity of fitness and nutrition, there are many varied schools of thought about the best way to exercise. The biggest shift we have seen is the popularity of weight training over cardio workouts. Are cardio workouts beneficial or necessary? Or is weight training and other dynamic forms of exercise sufficient for optimal health?

Benefits Of Cardio

The main reason many people pursue cardio is for its proven weight loss abilities. Cardio can help with a variety of other health areas however such as:

  • Improved lung capacity.
  • Better sleep habits.
  • Enhanced mental health and clarity.
  • Strengthening your heart.
  • Naturally boosting energy.
  • Stronger immune system.
  • Reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

This is why cardio should not be discounted as unnecessary unless you are some sort of professional strength athlete where your success is determined by your performance.

Should You Only Do Cardio Workouts?

Cardio workouts should form part of any well-balanced workout routine. A strong heart is critical to our overall health and longevity and cardio is the best way to achieve this. It is recommended that we all undertake a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio 3 days a week to promote a healthy heart. Far from being solely limited to running on a treadmill, cardio can be as simple as a fast walk or swim right up to high-intensity cardio such as doing Muay Thai, skipping rope, rowing, going for a jog or engaging in a game of team sports. Even multi joint resistance training like squats and chin ups when programmed a particular way, can count as a cardio workout. There is a huge variety of cardio workouts that you can tailor as part of your fitness routine.
